This week the U.S. Senate Agriculture Committee voted to reauthorize the U.S. Grain Standards Act and sent it to the full Senate. The bill extends the authorization for the Federal Grain Inspection Service to continue providing inspection services and maintain an official marketing standard for certain grains and oilseeds. South Dakota Wheat Commission Executive Director Reid Christopherson says that standard is critical for wheat growers as well as for U.S. agriculture.

He says having those standards in place is important to ensure our export customers that are products are of the highest standard and meet all safety protocols.

Christopherson is hopeful the Senate Ag Committee’s approval will help it get through the process and eventually get approved.

Senate Ag Committee ranking member Debbie Stabenow says the bill protects the interests of American farmers and ensures the credibility of the U.S. as a producer of high quality crops.
