SD DOT Chip Seal and Fog Seal Projects in Yankton Area


YANKTON, SD – On Monday, July 17, 2023, chip seal and fog seal projects will be kicking off on several highways in the Yankton area.

On two-way highways this means traffic will be reduced to one lane and guided with the use of flaggers and a pilot vehicle.  On divided highways traffic will be reduced to one land when work is in process.  Delays of up to 15 minutes can be expected in the work zones.

In addition loose rock will be present for a period of time ranging from 36 to 72 hours after each days application process is finished.  Permanent pavement markings are scheduled to be applied within 14 days of the initial chip and fog seal projects.

The eleven projects in the Yankton area are scheduled in the following order:

  1.  SD Hwy 44 for approximately 15 miles from US Hwy 18 to 424th Ave. near the James River.
  2. SD Hwy 18 for approximately 17 miles from US Hwy 81 to SD Hwy 19.
  3. SD Hwy 46 for approximately17 miles from just east of Irene to Truck Towne Plaza near Beresford.
  4. SD Hwy 11 for approximately 11 miles from SD Hwy 48 north to Alcester.
  5. SD Hwy 48 for approximately 11 miles from I-29 to the Iowa border.
  6. SD Hwy 50 for approximately 5 miles of the Hwy 50 bypass around Vermillion.
  7. SD Hwy 50 for approximately 11 miles of shoulders and median crossovers from east of 444th Ave. near Mission Hill to just west of 452nd Ave. near Gayville.
  8. US Hwy 81 for approximately 1/2 mile just south and north of the 300th St. intersection.
  9. SD Hwy 50 for approximately 11 miles from Tabor to Tyndall.
  10. SD Hwy 52 for approximately 12 miles from SD Hwy 50 to SD Hwy 37.
  11. SD Hwy 37 for approximately 10 miles from just south of SD Hwy 50 through the city of Springfield.

The overall completion date for this project is October 2023.
